Abstract

"The Information Technology, Communications and Electronic Skills Strategy Group was set up to develop a skills strategy for this sector. This second report sets out the work of the Group and identifies a number of areas it is addressing as a priority. Increasing numbers of people are obtaining IT qualifications but the report points to the need to attract and compete for the top end of the ability range of entrants, as IT systems become increasingly complex. It notes the lack of an agreed and consistent framework for describing the skill needs of the sector. Several other key issues are raised as requiring further study: whether the content of IT courses adequately reflects employers’ needs; the role of professional bodies in the sector; the need to simplify the qualifications framework and align qualifications with occupational standards; how to improve the image of the sector as a career, particularly for women and young people." - Cedefop website.
