The Adult Common Basic Data Set

In general, the principle behind the Adult Common Basic Dataset (ACBDS) was welcomed by respondents. The general consensus was that the data would be very useful for different bodies including school, LEAs and partner agencies (eg, OfSTED). The Adult CBDS would help to inform recruitment and retention planning. Nearly half of the Local Authorities responding were already in the process of implementing a new system to collect adult level data. Although many commented that the data would be useful they were concerned about the resources needed to gather the data. They suggested that additional administrative work for staff in schools needed to be taken into account together with any other cost implications. Close communication with other agencies was necessary to reduce the potential of overlap with similar data being collected. There was broad agreement with the categories in which the data items have been arranged. In particular the data item on ethnicity was welcomed and there was support for a data item which would ask for the reason for ending a contract and future employment intentions. It was felt that the qualification, training and assessments section would require a great deal of effort to maintain. Great support was given for the Adult CBDS to include all staff employed by schools (i.e non teaching staff as well as teachers) which would be useful for planning and statistical purposes and other bodies such as the Office of National Statistics. Some concern was raised with regards to data protection, and assurances were sought on the ownership and confidentiality of the data.
